Thank you for helping us spread the word about our recent efforts to oppose the Joyce Station Precinct Review!! Many in our community oppose the plans that could allow for tall, downtown-like towers to be put on the three corners of Joyce Station. We fear that our current retailers and residents will be displaced. Even after meeting with city planners, we still have concerns.
For many years, Renfrew Collingwood has been known for having a strong, diverse community, made up of people from different income levels and cultural backgrounds. Incoming development has the potential to drastically change the unique character of our neighbourhood by driving out our favourite local businesses and increasing rents. The City of Vancouver is proposing three, tall and expensive towers on three corners around Joyce Station. All three towers will be condo buildings that are 100% market-rate, which means 100% unaffordable for our community.
The newly formed Joyce Area Residents Association has been meeting for months to gather the concerns of local residents, retailers and community members.
The neighbourhood will become unaffordable. Retailers and residents will be displaced.
No concrete plans for affordable housing or community amenities from the City.
Inaccessible consultation processes, not enough language services for people to participate in the open houses.
In the past, our neighbourhood was attractive and affordable to immigrants and newcomers. Today, we cannot necessarily say the same. If expensive development is successful in driving more of our community members out, the problem will only get worse.
Next month, we have a chance to speak out and have our concerns heard at the City open house for the Joyce Station Precinct Review (Feb. 3, 2016 4:30-8:00 pm, Feb. 6 10:30am-2:00pm) at the Collingwood Neighbourhood House. Times listed here are 30 minutes before the actual open house times to give you time to collect your pins and signs in opposition to the development plans. Please help us spread the word.

The Joyce Area Residents Association (JARA) was founded in response to the Joyce Station Precinct Review that proposes market-rate condos on three corners around the skytrain station. The condos proposed have the potential to displace long-time community members of low to middle income backgrounds and many different immigrant groups. JARA has key concerns with the current options outlined by the City. The group demands protections for renters and retailers that threaten to be displaced and insists that the City make all consultation accessible to multiple language groups. JARA is currently connecting with homeowners, renters, local businesses and other community members to build a plan for the area that prioritizes genuine, multi-lingual consultation, community visioning and affordable housing.
Join us at the next Joyce Station Precinct Review Open House on Feb 3, 2016 at the Collingwood Neighbourhood House. Many other JARA members will be there to voice our concerns.
